Porto Alegre
Jennifer, Sascha and Elisa Terry are involved in this work:
We arrived in Porto Alegre, Brazil in March of 2004 as part of a church-planting team. Porto Alegre is Brazil's southernmost state capital and has one of the highest standards of living of anywhere in the country. The metropolitan area is home to about 3.5 million people.
Our team's original goal was to plant a congregation of about 300 people near downtown Porto Alegre. However, after a few years of struggle, it became obvious that God was leading us in a different direction. He was really blessing what was happening in our homes, even leading people to Jesus through friendships. But seekers were unlikely to set foot in our church building. In 2007 our team and church stepped out in faith and became a network of house churches.
Our team now works with 5 house churches in and around Porto Alegre. All of the Christians have been challenged through this new way of being church as our relationships with each other have broken through the superficial level and become more like family. God's blessings have been too numerous to list here, but we are most thankful for transformed hearts who have now allowed Jesus' love to take root.
