Hebrews 4:1-13 Objective: Get people to examine their Christian walk and security of their salvation. Reading: Hebrews 4:1-13. Memory: Hebrews 4:11., L_ u_, t_, m_ e_ e_ t_ e_ t_ r_, s_ t_ n_ o_ w_ f_ b_ f_ t_ e_ o_ d_. Introduction: 1. I caught a fumbled football; rejoiced, then it was grabbed away! I missed out; not precious enough, not careful enough, not clinging tightly enough. 2. Salvation can be like that. We Need to Make Certain Our Salvation Stays Secure. (WHY?) The writer of Hebrews is warning Christians that they are in danger of following the path of their ancestors who failed to receive what was promised them by the Word of God. It was not because of any failure on Gods part, but it was because of their own stubborn will and lack of trust that they never received what God had offered. We stand in the same situation. Lets learn from the Israelites experience, why it is so essential to make every effort to enter Gods rest. Notice first of all that he is indeed warning them not to lose their salvation. I. It Is Possible To Loose Your Salvation. A. Once saved, always saved is not a correct doctrine. NT simply spends too much times warning saved people about the danger of falling away to accept such a teaching as once saved always saved. Hebrews 6:4-6, It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 1 Corinthians 10:12., So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you dont fall! James 5:19-20., My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins. B. The Israelites missed the rest promised to them. Consider the example of the Scripture Reading. It is given to warn us! Romans 15:4; For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. The passage just read about Joshua in Hebrews 4 is truth - reserved for us for this purpose. Recently heard favorite speaker @ Christian radio station; Like a child misbehaving at party, parent may take them home early, so if Christian continues to sin and misbehave, they may die early; Father will call them home (If Christian sins horribly they get to go to heaven early?) There is a real problem with this kind of doctrine! The root cause that they failed to receive Gods offer is that they did not really have confidence in Gods ability to deliver the goods. The principle we need to learn is that II. Those Who Dont Really Trust The Word Of God Get Disqualified. A. Joshua and Caleb trusted. Others doubted. Numbers 14. 12 went to spy on land. 10 gave bad report. Struck down w/ plaque. Nation tried to go up after failing to trust; defeated. Because of failure to trust God, whole generation lost out. Psalm 95:7-11. Read. They failed to trust and lost. B. Do you really trust that God can deliver? Salvation? It is by faith, indeed, is your faith a genuine trust? Financially? Solving marriage problems? Upholding you in peer pressure? Faith is a confident expectation of the future. Do you have that confident expectation? C. Consider some symptoms of such distrust: Lack of attendance because I need to stay at home and work on marriage; job, home repairs, keep life balanced. Failure to confront people with their sins. Failure to follow by making changes in my life; to stop lying, swearing, cheating Such distrust is sometimes visible and obvious to everyone. Sometimes it is there even when we say we trust. Another way of looking at trust is to see if someone is really, genuinely and completely following Gods word. That means obedience. The principle here is that III. Those Who Dont Really Obey God Get Disqualified. A. Our words and actions sometimes dont agree. We say we trust God and His word. But, We continue to lie, swear, cheat on taxes, fail to obey civil law, fail to depend on Him B. We need to respond with our actions in order to receive what is offered. A while back they were giving rides on the fire engines in Potsdam. Folks who doubted didnt show up, so didnt get a ride. Folks who believed but didnt show up, didnt get a ride either! Those who say they forgive, but dont genuinely forgive, are not in Gods grace. Folks who say they trust God, but do things their own way instead of following His directions are not really trusting either. C. Disobedience can come from hardened attitudes. I dont care; Im going to cuss if I want to. She made me so angry that I couldnt help myself. God will just have to take me as I am D. Disobedience can come from carelessness. I didnt think God would mind I just wasnt thinking, watching, caring, paying attention. I didnt know what truth was (and really didnt care)! Cf.; Acts 17:30 "Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all everywhere should repent, Imagine a letter stating to you that a great prize, a dream vacation is made available to you. Would you respond and take the appropriate steps to receive the Prize? IV. Gods Rest is There, Available to You Right Now. A. Prepared and ready since Creation. Genesis 2:2, By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. What is the Rest? Original sense is Gods resting. Genesis 2:2. In Numbers 14, the land of Canaan is promised rest from enemies and problems. Presently our rest is from worries and enemies. See Matthew 6:33., But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Ultimately our rest is heaven. B. The failure of some to receive it does not remove its availability. Because some people dont respond to your offer to help doesnt me you wont help others. Because Ive never been to California does not mean California has been removed. C. Gods Rest is available, ready and waiting for you. John 14:1-4, Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Fathers house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going. New opportunity is available TODAY! The time to accept it has come and is NOW! So What? Both options are available to us still today. Each one of us still has the same two alternatives they had. Gods REST or Gods WRATH? Which will it be? As is says in Hebrews 4:13-14. Nothing in all creation is hidden from Gods sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. Gods word is effective and operating. Each one of us will be unmasked and totally exposed. God will and does know each of our secret thoughts better that our best friend in whom we confide everything. He knows you better that your spouse. Better than you know yourself if you are not honest. Trust God and open yourself up to Him entirely; follow Him in all His ways. Respond by turning away from all our ungodly habits and practices. Turn to Him in repentance and baptism. Now is the time. Channel both your heart and your behavior to follow God in everything! Today! Closing Prayer: Dont Lose Out! Hebrews 4:1-13 Reading: Hebrews 4:1-13. Memory: Hebrews 4:11 L_ u_, t_, m_ e_ e_ t_ e_ t_ r_, s_ t_ n_ o_ w_ f_ b_ f_ t_ e_ o_ d_.
